The facilities of the Claudio Paredes Chamorro Municipal Cultural Center hosted the fourth edition of the Security and Sustainability Seminar, an activity organized by the Magallanes Puerto Sostenible (MPS) committee with the aim of bringing maritime-port activity closer to the community of Punta Arenas and, especially, to new generations.
The day brought together representatives from the maritime-port sector, regional authorities, and students from technical-professional educational establishments in the capital of Magallanes, who participated in presentations focused on innovation, operational safety, and prevention in the workplace.
Ronald Reyes Donoso, agent of Ultramar Punta Arenas and director of MPS, highlighted the consolidation of the initiative, which this year reached its fourth version.
"This was our fourth version, which makes us very proud, as it allows the community of Punta Arenas to get closer to the region's maritime-port business. On this occasion, as director of MPS, I want to thank the participation of the three speakers, who addressed topics such as innovation through Antártica 21, safety in our ports through the AAMM presentation, and prevention against alcohol and drug consumption in the workplace by Dr. Murillo, from IST," he said.
The executive added that this type of activity seeks to generate a closer link between the industry and the local community, with special emphasis on the young people who participated in the meeting.
"We hope with this type of activity to contribute to the society of Magallanes, especially to the young people who participated in the seminar, as they are the future of the region," Reyes stated.
In the same vein, the president of Magallanes Puerto Sostenible and manager of Ultraport Punta Arenas, Miguel Palacios, highlighted that the committee's work aims to strengthen the sustainability and safety of port operations, in addition to bringing the activity closer to the community.
"Our purpose is focused on the sustainability and safety of port operations. Caring for the environment, generating employment, and bringing the port closer to the community is our number one objective," he affirmed.
Innovation and human capital
One of the topics addressed during the seminar was related to innovation applied to tourism and maritime activity in Magallanes. In this area, Roxana Seguel Vidal, sustainability specialist at Antártica 21, presented on the evolution of the company from the Magellan Explorer to the new Magellan Discoverer.
The new vessel incorporates hybrid-electric technology and state-of-the-art navigation systems, elements that aim to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and which, according to what was presented during the day, also represent opportunities for the development of new capacities and the training of regional human capital.
The program also included a presentation by the Association of Shipowners of Magallanes (AAMM), focused on port safety matters, while Dr. Murillo, from the Institute of Occupational Safety (IST), addressed the prevention of alcohol and drug consumption in the workplace.
Thus, the fourth version of the Security and Sustainability Seminar sought to integrate different dimensions of maritime-port activity, combining safety, innovation, sustainability, and training, with the purpose of strengthening the link between the industry and the community of Magallanes.
