Kempower and EVlution Charge announced the installation of charging infrastructure at the Global Container Terminals (GCT) facility, which serves the Port of Vancouver, one of Canada's largest.
The system allows for opportunity charging during shift changes and breaks, maximizing equipment availability and minimizing operational disruptions, stated Kyron Harvett, GCT's Manager of Operations Technology.
"We recently demonstrated this capability through a successful trial with a high-capacity electric terminal tractor, which operated 24/7 for several days using only opportunity charging. With nearly 100% availability and excellent support from Kempower and EVlution, we look forward to expanding our charging infrastructure as GCT continues to electrify its equipment fleet," Harvett concluded.
Kempower's distributed and modular charging technology is designed with built-in redundancy to maximize uptime and keep vehicles moving for daily operations. Its flexible design allows the charging infrastructure to adapt to existing port operations, helping fleets maintain productivity and equipment functionality without interrupting daily activities.
"A container terminal operates at its own pace, not ours, and the fleet cannot wait for a charger to be ready to move containers. We delivered this project and are responsible for its maintenance, so GCT has a team ensuring all 42 plugs are ready at the start of each shift," said George Ivanchikov, President and Co-founder of EVlution Charge.
The hub, featuring 21 dual-plug Kempower Satellites charging stations, offers 42 fast-charging outlets and 2.05 megawatts of available charging power. The chargers are operational and support GCT's electric vehicles as part of the terminal's ongoing sustainability efforts to achieve a 45% absolute emissions reduction by 2030.
