South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) announced the expansion of Norfolk Southern's intermodal rail service between Charleston and Huntsville, Alabama.
The daily direct rail service to Huntsville expands the Port of Charleston's reach to the growing markets of northern Alabama and central Tennessee, and increases rail access for importers and exporters who need greater connectivity to key markets in the Southeast.
"The intermodal service between Charleston and Huntsville represents a valuable addition for our customers, as we work with our Norfolk Southern partners to provide them with greater flexibility and speed to market at the right price," stated Micah Mallace, President and CEO of SC Ports.
"Strong intermodal connectivity and reliable port service are fundamental to delivering the efficiency and consistency our customers need, and this service between Charleston and the markets of northern Alabama and central Tennessee more than meets these expectations," the executive indicated.
SC Ports transports 25% of its volume by rail and offers its customers daily express intermodal service, with direct connection to the inland ports of Greer and Dillon.
"The Port of Charleston is a critical gateway to one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and Norfolk Southern is proud to strengthen its network in this important market," stated Shawn Tureman, Vice President of Automotive Intermodal Transportation at Norfolk Southern.
In 2025, SC Ports celebrated the completion of a $55 million expansion at the Greer Inland Port, which increased cargo capacity by 50% and added 2,743 meters of railway tracks to quickly manage longer trains.
