Neltume Ports announced its intention to invest approximately USD 900 million in the development of the Montevideo Container Terminal (MCT), a new specialized container terminal whose private initiative was presented to the Government of Uruguay for evaluation.
The proposal constitutes the largest private port investment presented in the South American country and would reflect the company's confidence in Uruguay's logistical and commercial potential.
The initiative seeks to usher in a new stage for the Port of Montevideo, strengthening its capacity to consolidate itself as a strategic hub for foreign trade and regional logistics chains with the highest operational efficiency on the Atlantic east coast.
"We are convinced that this private initiative responds to a concrete need of the Uruguayan port system. The proposal seeks to contribute to improving the competitiveness of the Port of Montevideo, expanding its capacity to handle the growth of foreign trade, and supporting the commercial opening strategy promoted by the country. With this infrastructure, Montevideo will become a key hub for Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, and be at the center of international trade in the region," said Fernando Reveco, Business Development Manager at Neltume Ports.
The initiative was formally presented to the Presidency of the Republic under the name Montevideo Container Terminal (MCT), thus beginning its evaluation process by the Uruguayan authorities.
The project contemplates the construction of an international standard specialized container terminal, designed to meet the future needs of regional maritime trade and the main shipping lines operating on the east coast of South America.
It includes approximately 940 meters of berthing line for 2 latest-generation post-Panamax vessels, a specialized dock for transshipment cargo on barges, 38 hectares of operational area, independent access, advanced technology and security systems, with a capacity to handle up to 1,150,000 TEU per year.
Its development will significantly expand the operational capacity of the Port of Montevideo and reinforce its role as a logistics hub for the region.
The proposal incorporates high levels of operational efficiency and will contribute to improving Uruguay's logistical competitiveness, generating new opportunities for foreign trade. Likewise, it is estimated that during its construction, the project will generate 1,800 jobs, boosting economic activity linked to the port sector.
The project will also favor the arrival of new international shipping lines and greater connectivity with the world's main markets.
Neltume Ports has extensive experience in the development and operation of port infrastructure in Latin America and has expressed its interest in actively participating in strengthening the region's logistics systems.
In this context, the presentation of Montevideo Container Terminal represents a long-term commitment to the future of the Port of Montevideo and to positioning Uruguay as a logistics platform for the Southern Cone.
