2026-09-12. The Castellón City Council today recognized the Port of Castellón, within the framework of the institutional act held to commemorate the city's 775th anniversary, for contributing to the city's growth and development.
The council has distinguished PortCastelló, which will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2027, for its strategic role as an economic driver, a gateway for goods, a gateway to international tourism, and a key piece for the internationalization and competitiveness of Castellón's productive sectors.
The president of the Port Authority of Castellón, Rubén Ibáñez, stated that "The greatness of the port is the greatness of the people who comprise it, which is why this is a recognition of all the men and women who have been part of the history of the Port of Castellón, to the twenty presidents there have been and their management teams; the work of each and every one has been important." In this regard, he made special mention of the recently deceased Juan José Monzonís, "the second longest-serving president in office and under whom the greatest transformation of the Port of Castellón occurred."
Likewise, Ibáñez also pointed out that it is a recognition of a specific society, the "grauera" society, to all those "graueros" who one day decided to embrace the port and have made it a way of life, employment, leisure, culture, and above all, a way of feeling, feeling a deep pride of belonging.
The Castellón council presented a total of ten awards distributed in four categories: Culture, Sports, Festivities and Traditions, and Institutions outstanding in the economic, social, and educational development of the capital.
In addition to PortCastelló, in the same category, the role of the Castellón Chamber of Commerce was also recognized for its 125 years of service to the business fabric of the province, and Universitat Jaume I for its decisive contribution to the development of Castellón as a space for knowledge, research, innovation, and training.
In the field of Culture, Ateneo Castellón and the writer Eloy Moreno were recognized; Olympic medalist Pablo Herrera and CD Castellón coach Pablo Hernández were recognized in the sports field. As for Festivities and Traditions, the distinctions went to Moros d'Alqueria, Cavallers de la Conquesta, and Colla Rei Barbut, for keeping Castellón's roots alive.
Likewise, in the same act, the priest and academic Ignacio Pérez de Heredia y Valle was named Adoptive Son of the city, for his early vocation, his commitment to the Mare de Déu del Lledó, and his vision of the Church as a guide for a society that needs hope and fraternity.
