The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) reports that, through its Directorate General of Merchant Marine (DGMM), it is following up on investigations related to an incident recorded this Wednesday, September 9, involving the crude oil tanker New Andros, flying the Panamanian flag, while transiting through Iraqi territorial waters.
According to preliminary reports received by the Maritime Protection office, the tanker was reportedly hit by an as-yet-unidentified device, causing a fire on board, which was successfully controlled and extinguished by Iraqi rescue boats.
According to available information, no casualties or injuries have been reported among the 22 crew members.
The incident occurs in a context of heightened military tension in the region, a situation that has generated alerts and reports on risks to commercial navigation in the area. Likewise, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported other incidents involving several merchant vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman overnight.
The AMP continues to monitor the risks faced by Panamanian-flagged vessels transiting war-conflict areas, applying the relevant protocols under the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
The AMP urges to follow the flag's recommendations, published on the Panama Ship Registry portal.
