The Panama Canal authorized a maximum draft of 49 feet for Neopanamax vessels starting September 28, one foot more than the current limit. The measure responds to the recovery of Gatun Lake and the rainfall recorded during September.
As of October 15, the interoceanic waterway will increase daily transits from 32 to 33, with 10 slots for Neopanamax vessels and 23 for Panamax. The Panama Canal Authority indicated that hydrological projections support the expansion of operational capacity.
The increased draft will allow authorized vessels to transport a greater amount of cargo, while the increase in slots expands transit options for shipping companies. The ACP maintains vigilance over water availability, as water deficit conditions persist in the basin.
