Two new electric STS cranes are being assembled at the TraPac terminal of the Port of Oakland, which will join two other recently manufactured units already operational at the port facility.
The structures are over 134 meters tall, making them the tallest at the maritime facility. Additionally, they are designed to handle 24 rows of containers and span a vessel nearly 61 meters wide and 11 containers high on deck.
The first gantry cranes are the first European-made cranes delivered to a U.S. West Coast port. The parts were manufactured by Liebherr in Ireland and arrived in sections in January 2026. On July 7, the Port of Oakland and TraPac celebrated the commissioning of the first two units.
"These cranes represent a commitment to Oakland and Oakland's potential. It is our shared commitment, our joint efforts, our shared growth, our shared opportunity, and the prosperity we bring to our communities and regions, both globally and internationally," said Kristi McKenney, Executive Director of the Port of Oakland.
"These cranes allow us to service the largest container ships currently operating, vessels that were previously beyond our reach. This translates into increased cargo capacity, greater efficiency, faster vessel turnaround, and a stronger gateway for global trade," commented Chris Lambert, Chief Operating Officer of TraPac Oakland.
