The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted a loan of 100 million euros (USD 115 million) to contribute to the transformation of Klaipeda, Lithuania's largest seaport, into a strategic gateway for clean energy and trade in the Baltic region.
The Klaipeda State Seaport Authority will use the EIB loan to modernize and expand infrastructure, increasing clean energy facilities and supporting the development of offshore wind energy.
The EIB loan will cover up to half of the total project cost, which amounts to approximately 201 million euros (USD 232 million), while the remaining financing will come from the European Union, national sources, and other institutions. The project also includes onshore power supply for ferries, green hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure, low-emission port vessels, improvement of quays for offshore wind energy development, dredging works, and reinforcement of breakwaters.
"Few projects illustrate Europe's priorities as clearly as the Port of Klaipeda. This is an investment that directly contributes to the missions of supporting European security and cohesion, while aligning with the green transition," stated EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer.
The port is part of the EU's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and the modernization of the quays and maritime infrastructure will help position Klaipeda as a key logistics hub for the deployment and maintenance of offshore wind farms, thereby supporting Europe's green transition and energy security.
