The President of the United States, Donald Trump, urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to cease military attacks against Russian diesel refineries, warning that these operations are causing a global fuel shortage.
"Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing: he has to stop destroying diesel fuel in Russia. Let him attack other targets, but not diesel, because it is causing a diesel shortage," Trump declared.
The US president stated that the current disruptions in diesel markets do not stem from tensions in the Middle East, but rather originate from the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump noted that Washington raised the issue directly with the Ukrainian leader, emphasizing that US officials do not want Kyiv to attack the refineries.
Ukrainian forces have "many other targets" for their military attacks, Trump said, arguing that reducing Russia's diesel production capacity is "harming the world."
Ukrainian officials have not issued an immediate response to the US president's statements.
Trump's call comes at a time when Ukraine is drastically intensifying its attacks against Russian energy centers and refining infrastructure.
On September 10, Zelensky stated that Ukrainian units hit eight military support facilities within a 24-hour period, including an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets region and a seaport in Dagestan.
Attacks also targeted the Novorossiysk naval base and oil terminal on September 9, as well as processing complexes in Ryazan, Perm, and Tatarstan on September 7.
The sustained disruption has limited Moscow's ability to process crude oil into transportation fuels. In response, Russia introduced diesel export restrictions in July and extended them through September.
Meanwhile, following attacks by the US and and Israel that began in February, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to navigation, causing serious disruptions to global energy and trade flows.
Additionally, recent attacks by Houthi rebels against the Saudi Arabian oil pipeline have further strained the market.
