EFE Sur reported that only starting Tuesday, May 12, one of the train tracks will be operational in the area of the accident that occurred early this Saturday, near Chiguayante. This will allow the resumption of passenger and freight operations, including service to ports, from the beginning of the day.
The company detailed that, within the framework of the contingency registered by the derailment of a Fepasa freight train, the cranes in charge of removing the affected cars, managed by Fepasa in coordination with EFE Sur, given the magnitude of the incident, will finish removing the cars at least until this Sunday, May 10.
Once that task is completed, EFE Infrastructure crews will be able to enter to carry out rehabilitation work on the damaged tracks, so no trains will circulate through the sector on Monday, May 11.
In addition to the partial reestablishment forecast for Tuesday, EFE added that work to recover the other tracks, for operational safety reasons, will have to be done at night and will extend until Thursday, May 14.
Authorities and the affected company established a contingency plan to address the transit of Corto Laja and Line 1 users, allowing continuity from Pedro Medina to Concepción Station, in coordination with the Seremi de Transportes del Biobío (Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Transport of Biobío).
The derailment of a freight train in the vicinity of Chiguayante station occurred after five in the morning, when a Fepasa convoy, which was transporting cellulose to a regional port, suffered the derailment of nine of its cars. No injuries were reported.
