Mid West Ports has completed a USD 7 million upgrade to the storage facilities at Lease 88 of the Port of Geraldton, Australia, which has strengthened port capacity, improved operational performance, and extended the lifespan of this fundamental asset by more than 20 years.
Shed number 88 provides essential storage capacity for Port of Geraldton customers. Originally built in 2006, the facility required investment after years of exposure to coastal conditions, corrosion, and weather phenomena.
The modernization brought a series of improvements to the 6,000 m2 facilities, including structural repairs and renovation, enhancements in cargo handling capacity, improved corrosion protection, and the installation of a new dust extraction system specifically designed to improve environmental performance.
The new dust extraction system enhances the plant's ability to manage dust generated during iron ore handling. The system works by creating an airflow that captures dust within the warehouse and returns the extracted material to the facilities, which helps reduce the possibility of dust dispersion during operations.
Mid West Ports CEO, Damian Tully, stated that investing in existing infrastructure is essential to maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient port. "Shed number 88 is an important part of the Port of Geraldton's export infrastructure, and this upgrade ensures it can continue to support our customers and the region's industries for many more years."
"Delivering this project safely, on time, and within budget is a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of our project team, contractors, and customers who worked together to complete this upgrade. With over 18,000 hours worked without lost-time injuries, the project demonstrates the great attention paid to safety and the quality of results throughout its execution," Tully added.
