As part of its community engagement activities, Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI) organized the session "Understanding the regional reality in international trade and criminal risks of port activity," aimed at students from the Faculty of Law at Arturo Prat University (Unap).
The initiative sought to strengthen the practical knowledge of future professionals regarding the local scenario of goods movement, with a special emphasis on identifying and managing criminal risks associated with the sector.
The activity initially brought together students specializing in Criminal Law, who participated in person at the facilities of the concessionaire Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI). This action, coordinated by the Drug Unit of the Regional Customs Directorate, allowed students to directly observe the procedures, technologies, and mechanisms used for detecting illicit substances, as well as to learn about the legal powers of the service within the Primary Zone.
Subsequently, the session was expanded to include third-year students from the faculty, incorporating technical presentations to provide a global view of the operation. EPI's Deputy Manager of Corporate Affairs, Rubén Rosas Matamala, discussed the logistics system's value chain as a key driver of regional development.
For her part, EPI's Legal Director and Head of Crime Prevention, Johanna Díaz Riquelme, delivered the training "Managing with ethics is preventing corporate criminal liability," where she analyzed the requirements for an effective Crime Prevention Model under current regulations.
Finally, the Head of Compliance and Risks, Andrés Zuleta Gallegos, presented on money laundering risks, delving into warning signs and prevention mechanisms within the port environment.
Through these initiatives, EPI reaffirms its commitment to the training of future professionals in Tarapacá, linking academia with the real challenges of the logistics industry.
