The Maritime Authority of Puerto Natales, in conjunction with the Investigative Police (PDI), the National Customs Service, and Carabineros de Chile, carried out an interagency operation at the local dock to conduct an anchorage inspection of a connectivity ferry arriving from Puerto Montt.
"An anchorage inspection corresponds to a detailed inspection carried out by the authorities with the purpose of detecting the eventual presence of illicit elements, undeclared goods, or irregular persons, and verifying the safety conditions of the vessel and those on board," the Maritime Authority communicated.
"This procedure includes a meticulous search of all areas of the vessel (cabins, holds, engine rooms, storerooms, and living spaces), as well as checking the documentation of the vessel, its crew, and passengers, ensuring compliance with current national and international maritime regulations," it added.
"Thus, a complete search of the vessel was carried out, including preventive identity checks for all crew members (31 people) and passengers (9 people), in addition to an exhaustive inspection of the living quarters and food storerooms, operating in a coordinated manner between members of the Maritime Authority and the other participating institutions," the official report expanded.
On behalf of the Maritime Authority, the Port Captain of Puerto Natales, Lieutenant Commander Rafael González, stated that "this interagency operation was carried out in compliance with established protocols, operating in a coordinated manner and utilizing a canine unit from the Maritime Police, thereby contributing to safety on the maritime routes of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region."
Meanwhile, Aldo Villarroel, from the National Customs Service of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, commented that "this anchorage inspection strengthens the work with other institutions in the Magallanes Region."
In this way, the Maritime Authority, together with the Investigative Police, the National Customs Service, and Carabineros de Chile, maintain coordinated work, enhancing capabilities in safeguarding the safety of crew members, passengers, and port terminals, which are fundamental for the development of Chile through the sea.
