The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA, Germany) announced the completion of the replacement work for the drive pulleys on the Kattwyk railway bridge.
Details of this milestone were provided on the HPA website, stating that "the replacement of the components presented a particular challenge for the execution. Each drive drum weighs approximately 45 tons and has a diameter of about three meters. Together with the bearings and support blocks, the components were moved as a unit of approximately 75 tons.
"For this work, it was necessary to secure the lifting section of the bridge in its upper position. In addition, the two counterweights, each weighing approximately 1000 tons, had to be secured. Before removing the drive drums, the 48 suspension cables were dismantled. Each suspension cable weighs approximately two tons," the publication added.
Finally, it was detailed that "the installation was carried out with a large crane mounted on a pontoon with a boom approximately 130 meters long. The roofs of the machine rooms were temporarily opened to allow the removal of existing components and the installation of the new drive drums."
