The floating dry dock of Austal USA, located at its ship repair facility on the waterfront of San Diego, is now fully certified and operational.
"Designed to efficiently dry-dock small surface combatants and similarly sized vessels, the dry dock is the centerpiece of the company's Repair and Services business line," Austal USA announced.
"Austal's dry dock significantly expands our ability to offer the Navy and other customers a full-service shipyard in San Diego," said Gene Miller, president of Austal USA.
"This capability will be an extraordinary asset for our customers, and we look forward to meeting the growing demand for repair facilities on the West Coast with dry dock services," he added.
The facility has a lifting capacity of 9,000 tons displacement lightship. It measures 162 meters in length and 47 meters in beam, with a sidewall width of 4.0 meters and a maximum draft of 11 meters. The dry dock cranes have a combined lifting capacity of 16 metric tons.
"Austal USA expresses its gratitude to the partners who played a key role in the final installation and preparations for the certification process. R.E. Staite Engineering Inc. provided essential dredging and construction services both offshore and in the coastal zone, while Chula Vista Electric was responsible for installing the shore power supply," the company stated.
"Additionally, Austal USA collaborated closely with PAE Industrial Operations, the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) C980, and Heger Dry Dock, whose technical support was fundamental to successfully obtaining the dry dock's certification," it concluded.
