K Shipbuilding, Sejin Heavy Industries, and ClassNK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the joint development of a new-generation eco-friendly methanol carrier that complies with the IGC Code amendment.
An amendment to the IGC Code, an international code for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk, is expected to be approved at the MSC 112 meeting – to be held in December this year – and is scheduled to enter into force on July 1, 2028.
Prior to its implementation, K Shipbuilding, Sejin Heavy Industries, and ClassNK agreed on the joint development of a 9,000 m³ methanol carrier that complies with this modified code.
Furthermore, the methanol carrier to be developed under this project will be equipped with energy-saving devices (ESDs) aimed at improving operational efficiency.
By incorporating a rudder bulb and an energy-saving fin, which contribute to greater propulsive efficiency, the vessel is expected to achieve higher fuel consumption efficiency and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
