NYK Line completes first ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering for ammonia-fueled vessel

NYK Line, together with Japan Marine United Corporation, Nihon Shipyard, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, and Kokuka Sangyo, completed the world's first ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia bunkering operation for an ammonia-fueled vessel.

At a pier at Japan Marine United Corporation's Ariake Shipyard, ammonia was transferred from the vessel Shoei Maru via the STS method to an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC) scheduled for delivery in November 2026. The operation was carried out in preparation for the AFMGC's sea trials.

Ammonia is expected to play a significant role as a next-generation marine fuel, as it does not emit carbon dioxide (CO2) during combustion and can contribute to the decarbonization of international shipping. However, its toxicity makes handling challenging, and establishing highly safe and reliable operations remains a hurdle for its practical use.

The bunkering operation was conducted after discussions among the participating companies. Operational procedures and safe work processes were established prior to the operation, allowing the transfer to be completed safely.

This delivery serves as a pioneering example of the fuel supply framework that will be required for the widespread adoption of ammonia-fueled vessels. The AFMGC is currently in the final stages of construction and is scheduled to commence operations in November 2026.
