The Minister of Transport and Communications, José Angello Tangherlini, held a meeting with Francisco Gonzales Hurtado, president of the Peruvian Association of Port Operators (ASPPOR), to evaluate proposals and coordinate how to use port infrastructure and maritime transport for aid delivery in potential emergencies due to the El Niño phenomenon. The Vice Minister of Transport, Gabriela Carrasco Carrasco, also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, the association raised the need to define the steps for receiving, storing, loading, and delivering cargo. Its representative pointed out that the maritime route could be necessary to transport aid to the north if roads are affected, and they offered to collaborate with the storage and transport capacity of their associates.
The head of the MTC reported that the sector is organizing a team to monitor possible infrastructure damage and coordinate a rapid response. He also indicated that Provías is already working on mobilizing modular bridges to the north and south of the country.
The meeting also addressed the difficulties of access to port terminals. ASPPOR representatives presented proposals to improve truck access and requested to participate in the review of measures related to port operations.
On behalf of the MTC, it was reported that the National Port Authority (APN) is working on a new proposal for operations regulations, which will be shared with sector stakeholders to receive their input. The update of the logistics services plan and actions to promote maritime cabotage were also discussed.
