HSE: Motor Failure Caused Drill Rig to Drop a Blowout Preventer
The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) determined that a single motor failure on the drill rig Deepsea Atlantic caused an uncontrolled lifting failure in April 2026, resulting in the loss of a blowout preventer and 400 feet of riser onto the seabed. The incident occurred on April 18 when one motor on Drawworks A tripped, followed by the remaining three motors, causing loss of control of the top drive and main brake system. Although no injuries occurred, HSE concluded the incident posed a significant risk of harm from falling debris.
