The search and rescue agency of Indonesia reported that it had recovered another victim from the wreckage of the passenger ship that capsized and sank in the Java Sea on the morning of September 13.
The vessel Virgo Transport 8 was carrying 243 people, including 30 crew members, when it capsized in bad weather during a voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.
"The victim was found by divers during a search inside the ship's hull," the agency said, adding that the victim will be evacuated by helicopter for identification.
The search and evacuation operation will continue with the participation of divers and also with air support, the entity reported. As of Saturday, September 19, authorities reported that nine deaths had been confirmed and more than 100 people had survived, with 126 people still missing.
The recovery operation for the sunken ship was extended for another week, due to the number of missing persons and because the salvage task to right the vessel is expected to take time, according to authorities.
