The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, urged de-escalation and a return to political negotiations amid crises in Iran and Yemen, while emphasizing the need to safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Daily News Egypt.
During a meeting with the European Union's Special Representative for the Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, the diplomat stressed that dialogue is essential for consolidating regional stability and that maritime security must be guaranteed under international law. They also examined the expansion of the bilateral agenda in trade, investment, and energy.
Abdelatty conveyed a similar stance to the President of the International Crisis Group, Comfort Ero, with whom he reviewed the hotspots of tension in Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, and Iran.
In terms of multilateral cooperation, the foreign minister met with the Executive Director of UNOPS, Jorge Moreira da Silva, to promote projects in health, transport, infrastructure, and digital transformation, leveraging the organization's technical capacity in mobilizing funds.
He also supported UN reform based on criteria of operational efficiency and measurable impact. It is worth noting that Moreira da Silva leads a working group focused on evaluating how incidents in Hormuz affect global trade and food security.
The agenda continued with Rebeca Grynspan, Costa Rica's candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General, with a view to succeeding António Guterres at the end of 2026. At the meeting, Abdelatty stated that the organization must prioritize the challenges of the developing world, such as indebtedness, climate change, and food and energy security.
Finally, in a dialogue with the president of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey Sachs, the head of Egyptian diplomacy warned that the financing deficit hinders the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, appealing to strengthen the alliance between his country's academic institutions and the global research ecosystem.
