In line with its investment strategy to strengthen Africa's logistics infrastructure, Maersk has inaugurated a new container depot with a capacity of 1,500 TEU in Kribi, Cameroon.
"By alleviating logistics bottlenecks, we can, together with our customers, drive further growth for the Cameroonian economy. Efficient and reliable supply chains are key to market growth, cost reduction, and strengthening competitiveness," stated Franck Dedenis, Maersk's Managing Director for West Africa.
Container depots are an essential link in global supply chains, seamlessly and efficiently connecting the maritime and land legs of the transport chain for import and export.
By providing specialized cargo handling services, storage options, and inspection and customs clearance services, supply chains can be accelerated through the use of a depot or, if necessary, slowed down, for example, in case of changes in demand and overstocking. Another key advantage of a depot is the increased availability of different container types near customer facilities.
In addition to the range of manual cargo handling services, customers using Maersk's new depot in Kribi will also benefit from increased visibility into the status of their containers through our digital booking, tracking, and monitoring solutions.
Cargo owners can also temporarily expand their storage infrastructure by integrating a Maersk depot near their own facilities into their supply chain.
The Kribi depot is equipped to handle reefer containers, which helps maintain temperature-sensitive goods in optimal condition throughout the journey. The new depot will offer food-grade containers.
With the recent opening of these facilities, Maersk now offers specialized services in eight owned depots in West Africa, in addition to more than 20 depots operated by third-party providers.
Maersk's new depot in Kribi adds another 16,000 m² to a network that already includes 150,000 m² in owned depots and over 280,000 m² in third-party depots. Maersk's specialized depot services are available in ten West African countries: Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.
