The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, toured Tuas Port this Sunday, October 4th, one of the terminals destined to become the world's largest fully automated container port.
As part of his visit to Singapore, President Mulino described the project as a model for Panama. During his tour, the president witnessed Singapore's dream of consolidating a single megaport since 1977, which is now becoming a reality with the inauguration of its first phase (out of four) in 2022 and its projected completion by 2040.
At the Operations Control Center, Mulino observed the impressive terminal, which will occupy 1,337 hectares, with 66 berths distributed along 26 kilometers and with a capacity of 65 million TEUs per year.
Located at the western tip of the island, Tuas Port is a model to follow: a single automated megaport that consolidates everything and could give Panama in the Americas the same advantage that Singapore has in Asia. Panama is the logistical "hub" of the Americas due to an unparalleled combination: the Canal, a multimodal infrastructure, the Colón Free Zone, and Panama Pacífico.
During his visit, the president received an explanation of the operation, toured the control center that directs all port activity, characterized by the absence of crane operators, with autonomous trucks and an automated yard that operates 24 hours a day with a performance 30% faster than a normal center.
Representatives of the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) thanked President Mulino for trusting in this mega-project, which is 100% electric and self-sufficient in energy thanks to warehouse roofs and cranes equipped with solar panels. They also emphasized the stance of neutrality and loyalty that both nations maintain, sharing the same vision with Panama.
The delegation accompanying the president was received by PSA representatives: Ong Kim Pong, Group CEO, PSA International; Seow Hwee, Head of Port Ecosystem and Tuas Terminals; and William Goh, Vice President of Service Excellence. From Panama, the attendees were Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha; José Ramón Icaza, Minister of the Canal; Sebastián Breton, Ambassador of Panama to Singapore; and Kristelle Getzler, from the Secretariat of Social Affairs and Competitiveness.
For this Monday, October 5th, President Mulino will meet with the President and Prime Minister of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Lawrence Wong, respectively, as part of his Asia tour to seek the opening of new markets, the consolidation of strategic alliances with the maritime, air, and agricultural sectors, and the attraction of new investments that generate more jobs for Panamanians.
