Miguel Lorenzo Appointed Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Board of Directors has appointed Miguel Antonio Lorenzo Fábrega as Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, who will accompany Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta in the challenges the waterway will face in the coming years.

The appointment of the Deputy Administrator by the Board of Directors is the result of a process aligned with the Canal's institutional framework, in exercise of its constitutional and legal mandate, and with full responsibility for the continuity, stability, and long-term vision of the interoceanic waterway.

"For the selection of the Deputy Administrator, the Board of Directors carried out an evaluation process of different profiles that was as rigorous and technical as the one that led to the appointment of the Administrator. With this appointment, we reaffirm our commitment to institutional integrity, transparency, and the safe and continuous operation of the Canal," said Jose Ramón Icaza, Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Panama Canal Board of Directors.

The designated Deputy Administrator has 28 years of experience at the Panama Canal. Throughout this period, he has held positions of increasing responsibility, from structural engineer to executive engineering manager, deputy manager of the Third Set of Locks Design, and subsequently, Vice President of Engineering and Services. Since 2020, he has served as Vice President of Infrastructure and Engineering. He played a significant role in the design, evaluation, and execution of the Expansion Program.

In his current position, he is responsible for the planning, maintenance, conservation, modernization, and strategic management of the Canal's infrastructure and assets, ensuring their operational reliability, sustainability, and ability to respond to the future demands of global maritime trade. His experience combines technical knowledge with strong leadership and complex project management capabilities.

Lorenzo is a civil engineer graduated from the Universidad Santa María La Antigua, with a Master's degree in Structural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and executive training from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

The Board of Directors expressed its gratitude to Rubén Pérez Pinzón for his willingness and institutional commitment, who will continue to serve as acting Deputy Administrator until the new Deputy Administrator takes office.
