The Directorate General of Merchant Marine (DGMM) of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), through its Department of Maritime Affairs Investigation, is advancing efforts to determine the circumstances and causes of the shipwreck of the Panamanian-flagged vessel AURA A, which occurred on the night of September 14 in waters located between Taboga and Taboguilla islands, in Panama Bay.
According to the preliminary report, the vessel departed from Flamenco Marina at 8:20 a.m., bound for Contadora Island. Approximately at 7:00 p.m., while navigating between Taboga and Taboguilla islands, the shipwreck occurred.
On board were 16 passengers and two crew members, consisting of the captain and a sailor, who were rescued alive by personnel from the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN). No injured, missing, or deceased persons were reported. The causes and factors that may have contributed to the shipwreck remain under investigation.
The DGMM is maintaining the investigative process, which includes gathering documentation related to the vessel and conducting corresponding interviews, with the purpose of establishing the circumstances in which the maritime accident occurred and determining its causes.
Regarding the environmental component, the preliminary report indicates that no contamination has been confirmed in the shipwreck area so far. However, the potential for hydrocarbon contamination in the vicinity of the vessel's position remains under consideration.
