The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), through the Directorate General of Merchant Marine (DGMM), is following up on the incident registered aboard the Panamanian-flagged tanker EL GAIA, while it was navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, north of the Musandam peninsula, in the Sultanate of Oman.
According to available information, the vessel suffered an impact in the engine room area, which caused a fire on board. Of the 25 crew members, 23 have been evacuated and are safe, while 2 others remain missing.
The AMP maintains permanent communication with the vessel's operators, the designated local agent, and the authorities of the Sultanate of Oman, following up on response and search efforts, within the framework of its responsibilities as a Flag State.
The institution will continue to monitor the evolution of the situation and provide support to the crew and operators of the vessel, in coordination with the competent authorities.
Given the prevailing insecurity conditions in the region, the AMP reiterates to the international fleet the recommendations contained in Merchant Marine Notices MMN-04/2025 and MMN-05/2026.
