The Minister of Production, Juan Carlos Requejo, participated in the "Cumbre 2026: Arequipa, Global Destination and Supplier of Clean and Low-Carbon Energies," an event that brought together representatives from the public, private, and academic sectors to promote the development of the Southern Peru Hydrogen Hub.
During the meeting, a study was presented on the mapping of stakeholders and governance analysis for the establishment of a Regional Green Hydrogen and Derivatives Hub in Arequipa.
The proposal seeks to articulate the public, private, and academic sectors to promote new investments and industrial opportunities.
The head of the Ministry of Production (Produce) highlighted that the hydrogen agenda must be directly linked to productive development and competitiveness.
In this regard, he noted that this energy source can contribute to modernizing processes, improving energy efficiency, and reducing the use of fossil fuels.
"The development of hydrogen will not only allow us to meet our climate commitments but will also translate into greater competitiveness, energy security, and new investment opportunities for Peru," the minister affirmed.
Arequipa has opportunities to develop new value chains around hydrogen, particularly in activities such as green steel, ammonia production, methanol, and fertilizers. There are also possibilities for sectors such as cement, ceramics, foundries, and metalworking.
Requejo emphasized that the consolidation of this Hub requires effective articulation among the National Government, regional and local governments, the private sector, and academia. He also highlighted the experience of Innova Arequipa as a coordination space to promote innovation.
"We have a great task ahead: to make our country more competitive and attractive for investment, working together among the National Government, regional and local governments, the private sector, and academia," he stated.
The activity was attended by the regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez Sánchez, and the president of H2 Perú, Daniel Cámac, who participated in the panel on the next steps to consolidate a hydrogen cluster in the region.
Furthermore, the Minister of Production, Juan Carlos Requejo, visited the Cervecería Arequipa plant of Backus – AB InBev, where he learned about the production processes and investments made to strengthen its operations in the region.
During the visit, Minister Requejo stressed that the articulation between the Government and the private sector is key to promoting industrial development, strengthening production chains, and creating conditions that allow for sustained investments.
This coordination also enables proactive work in the face of challenges that may affect productive activity, such as the El Niño phenomenon, by promoting measures that contribute to maintaining the continuity of operations and reducing risks for companies and their supply chains.
The plant, with more than 125 years of history, incorporates technology, automation, and efficiency measures in resource use. In 2024, it produced 1.57 million hectoliters and has an area of approximately 140,000 m².
The company also carries out environmental actions, including the recovery and reuse of CO2 and effluent treatment, as well as measures to optimize water consumption in its processes.
In this context, Minister Requejo highlighted that private investment contributes to the development of suppliers, the generation of formal employment, the training of technical talent, and the transfer of knowledge, elements that strengthen Arequipa's industrial ecosystem.
