BC Ferries crews rescued two people from the water after a fishing vessel sank near the Tsawwassen terminal in British Columbia on September 13th.
The response involved crews from Coastal Renaissance and Spirit of British Columbia after a person-in-water alarm was raised by Coastal Renaissance. The incident initially was reported as a marine rescue involving two people, with further details released by BC Ferries following the operation.
After the alarm was sounded, Spirit of British Columbia activated its emergency procedures, sounded three long blasts on the ship's whistle and launched its rescue boat. Deckhands Eric and Abhishek were among the first responders to reach the scene, where they found two people in the water.
Both were wearing life jackets, but one of the individuals was caught in fishing line connected to a crab trap. The person was largely submerged, with the line wrapped around the chest and arms and only the head remaining above the water.
The crew determined that the individual could not be safely brought aboard while still entangled. Eric and Abhishek therefore cut through the line, making four separate cuts before freeing the person and transferring them to the rescue boat.
Crew members Danielle and Vava from Coastal Renaissance, together with teams from the Tsawwassen terminal, also participated in the rescue operation.
Both people were subsequently brought ashore and handed over to BC Emergency Health Services. They were transported to hospital in stable condition.
BC Ferries said the incident demonstrated the importance of crew training, coordination and emergency procedures during rapidly developing marine incidents. The BC Ferry & Marine Workers' Union also highlighted the actions of the ferry crews, noting that their response helped rescue the two boaters.
