Oceana Frontier, the world's first LNG-powered bulk carrier, docked at ArcelorMittal Belgium's pier in the Port of Ghent.
North Sea Port stated that the vessel's arrival represents a new step forward in achieving more sustainable maritime transport of raw materials and underscores the ambition of both partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of the logistics chain.
The company also highlighted that by using LNG instead of conventional marine fuels, the vessel's CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 23%, in addition to decreasing sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. On a route of around 2,700 nautical miles, this translates to a reduction of about 500 tons of CO2 per trip.
After unloading its cargo in Ghent, the vessel will return to Canada to load a new shipment of iron ore for ArcelorMittal Belgium.
According to North Sea Port, LNG is currently considered a key transitional solution towards more sustainable maritime transport. At the same time, the sector faces the challenge of gradually replacing an outdated fleet with more modern and energy-efficient vessels.
Therefore, ArcelorMittal is exploring how new, more sustainable vessel types can play a greater role in the future transport of raw materials.
"The arrival of the Oceana Frontier in Ghent also offers a valuable opportunity to gain operational experience in receiving and unloading LNG-powered bulk carriers. This knowledge can subsequently be applied at other ArcelorMittal facilities," the company stated.
