The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have released preliminary guidelines for a proposed new three-year program to accelerate the transition to zero-emission road transport, offering eligible trucks incentives of $60 per terminal visit and up to $36,000 per vehicle annually.
The Zero-Emission Truck Incentive Program (ZE-TRIP) is part of the San Pedro Bay ports' action to implement measures promised through an agreement reached last month with the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
"We know that cost is one of the biggest barriers for our trucking partners to transition to zero emissions. This incentive program is another tool in our decarbonization strategy, helping to offset the higher costs of owning and operating zero-emission trucks, based on needs directly expressed by truckers. Close collaboration with our supply chain partners has been fundamental to the environmental progress we have already achieved and will be even more important as we pursue our goal of zero carbon emissions," stated Noel Hacegaba, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach.
"Accelerating the transition to zero-emission road transport requires both ambition and practical solutions. ZE-TRIP allocates real resources to this effort, rewarding the use of zero-emission trucks today and helping to drive the market for their future use. Working together with our trucking community and supply chain partners, we can continue to advance towards a cleaner and more sustainable port complex, while maintaining efficient and competitive cargo flow," pointed out Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles.
The project is designed to increase the competitiveness of zero-emission trucks, encourage greater utilization of existing zero-emission trucks, and attract more such trucks to the market to serve the ports.
