Brasília, 09/21/2026 – A technical mission held in the United States brought together the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ) and representatives of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to exchange experiences on shallow draft navigation, waterway infrastructure, and environmental management. Officials from the National Water Agency (ANA), the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor), the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) also participated in the activities.
The program includes visits to port facilities, research centers, and navigation structures in different locations. The idea is to learn about practices adopted in the United States related to river dredging, environmental processes in waterway development, and the regulation of river ports. Topics such as nature-based solutions, environmental sustainability, and numerical modeling are also addressed.
In the first stage of the mission, with an institutional objective, ANTAQ's Director-General, Frederico Dias, Director Caio Farias, Acting Director Alexandre Florambel, and the Superintendent of Waterway Studies and Projects (SEPH), Eduardo Queiroz, were part of the Brazilian delegation. The agenda included a visit to the USACE New Orleans District and the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, as well as presentations on navigation, channel stabilization, sediment transport, and environmental recovery.
The program also included the Bonnet Carré Spillway, the Port of South Louisiana, the Louisiana State University River Studies Center, and structures and laboratories of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg. Among the topics presented were physical models of navigation structures, vessel simulation, automatic identification systems, and nature-based solutions.
The second stage, of a technical nature, brings together ANTAQ technical staff this week for activities on the Columbia River, between the states of Oregon and Washington. The program includes technical presentations, visits to navigation structures, and activities related to water resource management, modeling, dredging, and the use of dredged material.
This initiative is part of Contract No. 20/2023, which provides specialized technical assistance from USACE to ANTAQ for studies and projects related to waterway infrastructure. The cooperation also seeks to contribute to the improvement of the Agency's technical staff and to the development of waterway concession projects.
