500 MW temporary transformer to ease Europoort grid congestion by 2028

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs particularly welcome the announcement by TenneT and Stedin that the availability of additional capacity on the electricity grid can be accelerated through the installation of a temporary transformer in Europoort. The expansion is considerable, with the transformer having a capacity of 500 MW. For many companies, this means they can bring forward their expansion and sustainability plans. At the same time, additional solutions need to be developed until the permanent grid expansions have been realised and grid congestion has been resolved.

According to Deltalinqs, this earlier availability of additional capacity gives companies looking to invest in the port of the future greater scope to move forward. Many companies have been waiting a long time for a grid connection. They want to know as soon as possible whether this expansion will provide a solution for them. Companies need clarity to make investment decisions and proceed with their transition plans.

The commissioning of the temporary transformer is expected at the end of 2028 at the earliest and is subject to permits being granted and the required cable connections being installed. A structural solution is still expected to be in place in the years after 2032, when the planned grid expansions are completed. It therefore remains important to keep up the pace. The Port of Rotterdam Authority emphasises that all parties involved must continue to focus on alternative measures that can bridge the period until the completion of this new infrastructure. For example, additional grid capacity can be created through smarter use of existing capacity, greater flexibility in electricity consumption and additional electricity generation in the port area.

That is why the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs will continue to work together with companies, grid operators and governments to develop additional solutions. Within both the Energy & Industry Board HIC and the New Energy Taskforce, the collaboration will continue to develop promising measures and, where possible, accelerate their implementation. The fact that it is now possible to install a temporary transformer in Europoort demonstrates that joint efforts can deliver concrete results. We will continue along this path with many other initiatives aimed at further reducing grid congestion and enabling the continued sustainability and economic development of the port and industrial complex.
