Maersk implements low water surcharges on Rhine River amid transport constraints
Maersk announced surcharge schedules for Rhine River barge transport due to unexpectedly low water levels affecting inland operations. Surcharges apply at three measuring points—Duisburg-Ruhrort, Kaub, and Cologne—with rates ranging from EUR 20 to EUR 1,670 depending on water depth and container size. When water levels fall below 81cm at Kaub or 181cm at Duisburg-Ruhrort, loading guarantees cannot be provided. These exceptional conditions may eventually render barge transport operationally infeasible.
