US Navy Says Iran Using Mines to Control Hormuz Shipping Routes
The US Navy's Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle stated that Iran's mining strategy in the Strait of Hormuz aims to channel commercial shipping into sea lanes near Iranian shores to control traffic and collect tolls. The UN's International Maritime Organization estimated about 80 mines have been laid in the waterway. Admiral Brad Cooper told Congress in May that US strikes destroyed more than 90% of Iran's estimated inventory of around 8,000 mines in storage.
