Oman tanker spill ranks among worst oil disasters in years
A vast oil spill from the grounded tanker Caroline Bezengi, carrying an estimated 800,000 barrels of Russian crude, has reached Oman's mainland and now covers more than 2,000 square km. The vessel ran aground on June 30 at an island within a marine nature reserve. Oil spill specialist John Amos warned the slick could rival the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster, with potential losses of 40 to 50 million gallons. Complex war and sanctions-related rules are hampering response efforts.
